As someone who has spent years wearing chronographs, I’ve always had a soft spot for panda dials. There’s something so timeless about the crisp contrast of black subdials on a white background. And when it comes to authentic racing heritage, few brands do it better than Hanhart. That’s why I was beyond excited to go hands-on with the new Hanhart 415 ES Panda — and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

Right out of the box, the 415 ES Panda strikes a perfect balance between vintage and modern. The white dial is bright but not stark, and the black subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock pop beautifully without being flashy. It’s the kind of dial that immediately brings to mind classic racing dashboards — simple, focused, and purpose-driven.

A subtle touch I love is the reintroduction of the Hanhart wing logo at 12 o’clock. It’s a nod to the brand’s 1960s design language and gives the watch a distinctive, old-school character. I’ve owned and handled quite a few vintage Hanharts over the years, and this watch instantly reminded me why the brand’s historical pieces are so beloved.

There’s more to the panda dial than just looks. The readability on the 415 ES Panda is outstanding. The sharp contrast lets you see elapsed minutes and small seconds at a glance, and the modern Super-LumiNova® C1 GL X2 lume on the hands and numerals glows a bright white in the dark. It’s so much better than the faint, uneven lume on many vintage chronos.

The high-domed sapphire crystal completes the look, adding a touch of vintage charm while giving you peace of mind that the watch will stand up to scratches. The anti-reflective coating inside the crystal keeps glare at bay so you can read the time easily, whether you’re outside on a sunny day or under fluorescent lights.

One of the highlights for me is the decision to use the Sellita SW510 hand-wound movement. There’s something deeply satisfying about manually winding a chronograph each morning. The smooth resistance of the crown reminds you that you’re wearing a mechanical instrument, not a disposable gadget.

The movement runs at 28,800 beats per hour and comes regulated by Hanhart’s watchmakers to an impressive 0 to +8 seconds per day on average across six positions. After a week on the wrist, mine was consistently within +4 seconds per day, which is fantastic for a mechanical chronograph.

And the 58-hour power reserve? It’s a godsend. You can take the watch off on Friday night and pick it back up Monday morning without worrying about resetting the time.

I’m a sucker for well-sized chronographs, and at 39 mm across with a lug-to-lug of 46 mm, the 415 ES Panda feels just right. It sits perfectly on my 17 cm wrist — large enough to have presence but not so oversized that it looks out of place with a dress shirt.

The rotating bezel with its black ceramic inlay is another standout feature. It’s bidirectional with 60 crisp clicks, and while it’s not a dive bezel, it’s useful for timing everything from coffee brews to parking meters. Plus, the ceramic stays scratch-free and keeps the watch looking new.

Hanhart’s attention to detail shows in the finish, too: the satin and polished surfaces on the case transition cleanly, adding visual depth without being showy.

Hanhart designed the 415 ES Panda with real-world practicality in mind. The case is anti-magnetic, which might not sound exciting, but it means you don’t have to worry about your phone, headphones, or laptop throwing off your watch’s accuracy.

Then there’s the shock protection system Hanhart developed to cushion the movement. It’s reassuring to know the watch can handle everyday bumps without skipping a beat. Add in 10 ATM water resistance, and you have a chronograph you can truly wear every day.

I tried both the calfskin leather strap and the steel bracelet, and they each have their own vibe. The leather straps are classic and come in black, dark brown, or light brown — all lined with soft Alcantara. They’re comfortable, look great, and age nicely.

But the steel bracelet is a real surprise. It’s solid, well-made, and features a folding clasp with a clever tool-free micro-adjustment system. With a simple press of a button, you can fine-tune the fit by up to 10 mm, which is a total game-changer when your wrist size fluctuates during the day.

Both options feature the Hanhart wing logo on the clasp or buckle, which ties the package together beautifully.

Hanhart didn’t just reissue a vintage chronograph with the 415 ES Panda — they improved on it in ways that matter. From the accurate, hand-wound movement to the shock-protected case, from the crisp lume to the practical bracelet, every element has been thoughtfully executed.

I’ve worn plenty of panda chronographs, but this one stands apart for feeling genuinely rooted in racing history. It’s not a marketing gimmick or a shallow homage — it’s a watch made by a brand that helped shape the category in the first place.

If you’re looking for a panda dial chrono with true motorsport DNA, modern reliability, and a size that works on almost any wrist, the Hanhart 415 ES Panda deserves to be at the top of your list. It’s a watch that doesn’t just look the part — it plays it, with style and substance to spare.
