The Sinn 556 I F.A.Z. II O introduces a vibrant new interpretation of the German watchmaker’s much-admired 556 collection. Created exclusively for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (F.A.Z.), this special edition celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (F.A.S.), bringing together two established Frankfurt institutions with a shared appreciation for precision, quality and timeless design. Limited to just 100 individually numbered pieces, the watch combines Sinn’s unmistakable instrument-inspired styling with a striking silver and orange dial configuration.
At the centre of this anniversary edition is a silver electroplated dial, providing an elegant backdrop for the vivid orange hands and hour indices. The unexpected colour combination gives the familiar 556 design an energetic, contemporary personality without departing from its functional origins. Clean dial architecture, carefully proportioned markers and luminescent coatings on the indices and hour and minute hands preserve the straightforward timekeeping functionality that has made the 556 series a favourite among watch enthusiasts.
One of the most intriguing details is found within the date display. In a discreet reference to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the numeral “1” has been replaced by the distinctive letter “F” associated with the newspaper. This thoughtful modification integrates the anniversary tribute directly into the watch’s everyday operation, creating a small but meaningful connection to the publishing institution behind the collaboration. It is a detail that rewards closer attention while maintaining the beautifully uncluttered appearance of the dial.
Surrounding the silver dial is a 38.5 mm satinised stainless steel case, combining understated aesthetics with the substantial engineering expected from Sinn Spezialuhren. At just 11 mm thick, the watch offers versatile proportions suitable for regular wear. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal features anti-reflective treatment on both surfaces, while a screw-down crown, screw-fastened case back and 20 bar water resistance provide durability well beyond the requirements of ordinary everyday use. The case is also low-pressure resistant and complies with the water-resistance requirements of DIN 8310.
Powering the watch is the established SW 200-1 self-winding mechanical movement, operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and equipped with 26 jewels. Its practical functions include central hours, minutes and seconds, a date display and a stop-seconds mechanism for precise time setting. The movement also meets the anti-magnetic requirements of DIN 8309. Beneath the transparent sapphire crystal case back, the automatic winding rotor has been specially engraved with the famous “Kluger Kopf” or “Bright Mind” emblem from the F.A.Z. advertising campaign, providing another distinctive element exclusive to this collaboration.
Each Sinn 556 I F.A.Z. II O carries an individual limited-edition number, marking its place within the strictly limited production of 100 examples. The orange accents lend a fresh visual identity to the traditionally restrained 556, while the commemorative date display and engraved rotor acknowledge the longstanding relationship between Sinn and the F.A.Z.
