Description
Sinn 140 A S Anniversary
Celebrating 65 years of German watchmaking, the Sinn 140 A S Anniversary is a limited-edition chronograph that brings together one of the brand’s most important historical designs with contemporary technical innovation. Restricted to just 300 pieces worldwide, this anniversary model pays tribute to the enduring legacy of the Sinn 140 series, a collection whose reputation extends well beyond traditional watchmaking and into the history of space exploration. With its distinctive instrument-watch appearance, sophisticated chronograph movement and specialised case technologies, the 140 A S Anniversary represents a particularly significant addition to Sinn’s celebrated range of mechanical timepieces.
The origins of the 140 series are closely connected to the German physicist and astronaut Reinhard Furrer, who wore a Sinn 140 S during the D1 Spacelab mission in 1985. Equipped with the legendary Lemania 5100 movement, Furrer’s chronograph demonstrated the ability of a self-winding mechanical watch to function reliably in the weightless environment of space. This historic achievement established the 140 as one of Sinn’s most recognisable designs and created a legacy that continues to influence the collection more than four decades later. The 140 A S Anniversary honours this extraordinary chapter in the brand’s history while incorporating technical developments that distinguish it from its predecessor.
At the heart of the anniversary edition is the SINN SZ01 automatic chronograph movement, a specially developed calibre that preserves one of the defining characteristics of the original Lemania 5100. Rather than displaying elapsed minutes on a conventional subsidiary counter, the SZ01 features a centrally mounted 60-minute stopwatch hand with a jumping minute indication. Combined with the full-diameter minute scale, this arrangement allows elapsed time to be read with exceptional clarity and precision. Both the central chronograph minute and seconds hands feature luminous coatings, maintaining the instrument-focused functionality that has long characterised Sinn’s approach to watchmaking.
The 44 mm stainless steel case retains the distinctive character of the historic 140 series while introducing a refined combination of polished and satinised finishes. Its Black Hard Coating is applied on a TEGIMENT Technology basis, providing enhanced surface resistance to scratches and everyday wear. The carefully considered case construction is complemented by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides, ensuring excellent visibility of the matte black dial. Luminous hour markers and hands reinforce its exceptional legibility, while the internal rotating pilot’s bezel, complete with a luminous key mark, provides additional timing functionality.
Sinn’s expertise in engineering functional mechanical watches is particularly evident in the technical protection incorporated into this anniversary edition. The chronograph push-pieces and crown feature the brand’s D3-System, an advanced sealing construction designed to provide additional protection against moisture, dust and external impacts. Ar-Dehumidifying Technology further enhances operational reliability by reducing moisture within the case and helping prevent internal fogging. Together with water and pressure resistance to 10 bar, low-pressure resistance and anti-magnetic properties in accordance with DIN 8309, these technologies provide the robustness expected from a professional instrument chronograph.
Measuring 15.5 mm in thickness and weighing 118 grams without its strap, the Sinn 140 A S Anniversary maintains the substantial proportions associated with its historic design. Its 22 mm lug width, carefully engineered case and practical chronograph functions reflect a watch conceived around mechanical performance and operational clarity. As a limited edition of only 300 pieces, the 140 A S Anniversary offers collectors a distinctive interpretation of an important chapter in both German watchmaking and spaceflight history, combining the character of the original space chronograph with six and a half decades of Sinn’s engineering expertise.
