Description
Mühle-Glashütte Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994 – Anthracite Blue (on Premium velour band)
Model: M1-44-75-1994-LB-V
The Teutonia is more than just an elegant business watch; it is also the timeless classic at the heart of the Mühle collection. It therefore comes as no surprise that it plays a role in Mühle’s anniversary year 2024, fitted with the complication that marked the birth of the successful watch family: the big date display. The Edition 2024 model also features a Mühle module which was designed in-house and celebrates its premiere in the MU9424-GD movement.
For Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte, 2024 is a year of celebration, marking 30 years since Hans-Jürgen Mühle re-established the family company. After starting out by successfully manufacturing high-precision marine chronometers, it wasn’t long before Mühle also added innovative ship’s timepieces and functional nautical wristwatches to the product range.
The Glashütte-based manufacturer traditionally uses such occasions as an opportunity to treat its fellow watch aficionados to a technical delicacy or two, and the anniversary year 2024 is no exception. This year, a newly designed modular movement is the cherry on top of the cake. As the “GD” in its name suggests – GD stands for “Großdatum,” German for “big date” – the MU9424-GD movement offers a special something in the form of a flexibly positionable big date module on its dial side. With this, the Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994 is not only a successful reinterpretation of the first Teutonia launched back in 2002 but also the ultimate work of watchmaking art in the Edition 1994 collection.
Selected Mühle Watches: the Edition 1994
The Edition 1994 collection celebrates 30 years of the family company Mühle-Glashütte in its current form. It features selected Mühle watches that will be released as special highlights throughout the anniversary year. The celebrations were kicked off by the launch of the 29er Big BRONZE Edition 1994 in January 2024, followed by the S.A.R. Rescue-Timer Edition 1994 in April, the month in which the modern-day Mühle-Glashütte was founded. The Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994, which features the newly developed “MU9424-GD” modular movement, is the fourth model to join the exclusive range of anniversary editions.
In honour of the company’s 155 years of tradition in Glashütte, each wristwatch model is limited to 155 timepieces. Each Edition 1994 has also been fitted with exclusive anniversary highlights, for example, various elements in Mühle blue. Given the importance of the anniversary number 30, it has been highlighted in the second and minute scales. The number 55 has also been modified in honour of the occasion, replaced with 155 to represent the number of years that have passed since Robert Mühle first established the family company.
A New Take on the Big Date Display: The Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994
When it was first launched back in 2002, this model was simply known as the “Teutonia,” an elegant time-measuring instrument characterised by its silver dial with a guilloche finish, which is still its defining feature in the present day, and featuring a large date display. Since then, however, the Teutonia has moved onwards and upwards, not only becoming an impressive watch family but also the true flagship of the Glashütte-based watch manufacturer.
In honour of the anniversary year 2024, the legend returns to the wrist: a special Edition 1994 featuring the design of the Teutonia IV, limited to two edition models of 155 timepieces each.
The two models of the Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994 boast a stainless steel case with a 41-millimetre diameter. The middle of the case is not only adorned with the Teutonia’s characteristic vertical finish, which is carefully applied by hand, but also has the typical volute-shaped lugs, the top surfaces of which are finely polished, just like the bezel. In this impressive design, the varied surface finishes of the case show just how much love, care, and attention to detail go into Mühle-Glashütte’s Teutonia, from the development phase right through to the final production.
Depending on the model, the case perfectly frames either a horizontally textured anthracite-blue dial or an ice-blue dial with a fine sunray finish. Both models feature a big date display at the 6 o’clock position – a development made possible by a new module that was designed in-house by the watch manufacturer and is now celebrating its première in the Mühle MU9424-GD movement.
This unusual position is not the only standout feature of the new models: instead of a small second display, they have a second hand extending from the centre of the dial to complement the straightforward and modern aesthetics of the Teutonia IV. The particularly easy-to-read big date display therefore forms the perfect background for not two, but three fine hands with a bright nickel-plated finish. With their perfectly coordinated lengths and proportions, these lance-shaped hands reveal the time on the clearly marked minute graduation with small second/minute numerals. The models pay tribute to Mühle’s double anniversary by highlighting the minute numeral 30 in bright Mühle anniversary blue and replacing 55 with 155.
The anniversary celebrations also continue on the back of the Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994, where the new Mühle MU9424-GD movement can be admired through a large cut-out transparent panel made of sapphire crystal. A look through this panel reveals yet another anniversary highlight, the Mühle special-edition rotor featuring a gold-coloured 30-year anniversary logo. Even the movement retainer of the new movement is an aesthetic delight, with its finely grained finish allowing the gold-coloured engravings of the calibre and module name to truly shine.
Last but not least, the models also offer the defining component of a reliable Mühle movement: the company’s particularly shockproof woodpecker neck regulation. Once the components have been carefully finished and assembled, the movement is put to the test in six different positions and regulated to achieve accuracy values of between 0 and a maximum of +8 seconds per day. This precision target complies with the German chronometer standard and has the main aim of ensuring that the wearers of the Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994 are never late because of their time-measuring instruments.
