Moritz Grossmann Backpage Tremblage Blue
The Moritz Grossmann Backpage Tremblage Blue has been created as part of a rare anniversary series celebrating the 200th birthday of Carl Moritz Grossmann, born on 27 March 1826. As one of Glashütte’s most important historical figures, Grossmann was not only a gifted watchmaker, but also a scientist, author, educator, and founder of the German Watchmaking School in Glashütte. This platinum anniversary edition pays tribute to that legacy through a watch that brings the technical beauty of the movement to the front of the dial.
The BACKPAGE concept is one of the most distinctive expressions of modern Moritz Grossmann watchmaking. Rather than simply revealing the movement through the case back, the calibre is constructed in mirror image so that the most visually compelling movement architecture can be admired from the dial side. The result is a timepiece where the view normally reserved for the reverse of the watch becomes part of the main visual identity.
At the centre of the design is the manufactory calibre 107.0, a manually wound movement regulated in five positions and composed of 230 individual parts. It is based on the principles of the calibre 100.1, yet reworked with a mirrored escapement, mirrored oscillation system, and an additional wheel between the crown wheel and ratchet wheel to reverse the drive train. This technically complex arrangement allows the movement to appear in its most captivating form from the front.
The blue German silver dial section is finished by hand using the traditional tremblage engraving technique. This demanding method involves guiding a cutter across the surface with tiny, controlled movements, creating a finely textured matte finish with a depth and softness that cannot be replicated by machine. In the Blue edition, the tone is described as “blue meteor”, bringing a vivid yet refined contrast against the gold-plated gear wheels, gold chatons, polished screws, and untreated German silver movement components.
The dial layout has been deliberately kept open, allowing the movement to command attention. A fully circulating minute scale frames the composition, while the hour display runs from 11 to 5 o’clock. The manually crafted steel hands are annealed to a blue hue, tying the display together with subtle chromatic precision. Every element, from the hand-finished hands to the hand-engraved balance cock, reflects Moritz Grossmann’s commitment to watchmaking as both engineering and fine craft.
The platinum case measures 41 mm in diameter and 11.35 mm in height, giving the watch presence without overwhelming the intricacy of the movement. On the reverse, the balance cock carries a special “1826” engraving, a discreet reference to the year of Moritz Grossmann’s birth. The watch is completed with a hand-stitched blue alligator leather strap and a platinum prong buckle.
Limited to only twelve pieces, the Moritz Grossmann Backpage Tremblage Blue is a rare collector’s watch that unites historical tribute, movement architecture, platinum casework, and hand-executed decorative craft. It does not imitate the past, but instead carries Grossmann’s founding spirit into a deeply contemporary expression of independent German watchmaking.
