Created to mark the 25th anniversary of LANG & HEYNE, the Friedrich III Power Reserve Rose Gold Limited Edition brings a significant new complication to one of the Dresden manufacture’s most recognisable classical designs. Rather than radically altering the character of the Friedrich III, LANG & HEYNE has developed it with characteristic restraint, introducing a purpose-built power reserve mechanism while preserving the elegant proportions, large off-centre seconds and traditional Saxon identity of the original.
The 39.2 mm case is crafted exclusively in 18ct rose gold for this execution, giving the watch a warm and distinctly traditional character. At just 10.5 mm in height, the case maintains the balanced proportions expected of a refined hand-wound dress watch, while sapphire crystals to the front and rear allow both the dial and extensively finished movement to be appreciated. Anti-reflective treatment is applied to both sides, and water resistance is rated to 3 bar.
Its dial is particularly noteworthy. LANG & HEYNE has constructed it from three separate ceramic components, flat-polished to create a remarkably crisp surface and combined with a givré-finished sub-dial plate. Roman numerals are engraved directly into the ceramic before being filled with lacquer, while newly designed broad spade-shaped hands give the Friedrich III Power Reserve its own visual identity. The large off-centre seconds remains an important element of the composition, balanced by the new power reserve indication above.
Behind the display sits the new hand-wound LH Caliber VI-II. Developed from the manufacture’s established Caliber VI, it introduces a compact differential gear train specifically for the power reserve indication. Two crown-toothed wheels allow the system to account for the winding and unwinding of the movement through a shared differential arrangement. This provides the wearer with a clear indication of the remaining reserve while helping identify both the appropriate time to rewind the movement and the point of full wind.
The purpose of the complication goes beyond convenience. Power reserve indications have historical relevance in marine chronometers, precision clocks and observation watches, where maintaining the mainspring within a favourable portion of its operating range could assist consistent timekeeping. LANG & HEYNE applies the same instrument-focused thinking here, turning a seemingly simple indication into a complication closely connected with the performance of the movement. Caliber VI-II operates at a traditional 18,000 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 55 hours of running time.
Comprising 174 components, 27 jewels and a brilliant-cut diamond, the movement reflects the extraordinary level of detail for which LANG & HEYNE has become known. A hand-engraved balance cock, individual edition markings and the designation “FIII-Reserve” reinforce the special nature of the anniversary model. Produced as part of a limited edition of just 25 Friedrich III Power Reserve watches in 18ct rose gold and 950 platinum, this rose gold execution brings together traditional Dresden aesthetics, genuine mechanical development and the unusually high level of in-house craftsmanship that has defined LANG & HEYNE since 2001.
