The Lang & Heyne Friedrich III Power Reserve Platinum Limited Edition marks the Dresden manufacture’s 25th anniversary with a watch whose restrained appearance conceals one of the most significant mechanical developments of the Friedrich III to date. At its heart is the newly developed LH Caliber VI-II, an evolution of the manufacture’s celebrated hand-wound Caliber VI incorporating a purpose-designed differential mechanism for the power reserve display.
For this execution, the Friedrich III’s beautifully proportioned case is produced in 950 platinum. Measuring 39.2 mm across and only 10.5 mm in height, the dimensions remain refined despite the density and presence of the precious metal. Platinum gives the watch an understated character particularly suited to LANG & HEYNE’s philosophy: extraordinary watchmaking that reveals its significance through craftsmanship and mechanical detail rather than overt decoration.
A newly developed three-part ceramic dial forms the visual centre of the watch. Its flat-polished surfaces contrast with a finely givré-finished sub-dial plate, while the Roman numerals are individually engraved into the ceramic and filled with lacquer. Broad new spade-shaped hands establish a stronger visual identity for the anniversary edition, complemented by the Friedrich III’s signature large off-centre seconds and the newly integrated power reserve indication.
The power reserve is more than a visual addition. LANG & HEYNE has drawn on the functional tradition of precision watches and marine chronometers, where an indication of the remaining mainspring energy allowed the operator to maintain the instrument within a favourable portion of its running cycle. On the Friedrich III Power Reserve, the display reminds the wearer when winding is appropriate while also providing a clear visual indication as full wind is approached.
Mechanically, this is achieved through a compact differential gear train incorporated into the LH Caliber VI-II. Two crown-toothed wheels allow the mechanism to interpret the winding and unwinding states of the mainspring and translate them into the position of the power reserve hand. The movement operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour, provides approximately 55 hours of running time and measures just 4.9 mm in height despite the additional complication.
The calibre contains 174 individual components, 27 jewels and a brilliant-cut diamond, complemented by the hand finishing expected from LANG & HEYNE. A hand-engraved balance cock is visible through the sapphire caseback alongside commemorative engravings including “One of 25” and “FIII-Reserve”. Produced as part of an anniversary edition limited to only 25 Friedrich III Power Reserve watches across 950 platinum and 18ct rose gold, the platinum execution is an especially discreet expression of contemporary independent Saxon watchmaking.
