Description
Hanhart Red Lion Mk II
The Hanhart Red Lion Mk II is the latest chapter in the ongoing story of one of Germany’s most recognisable pilot chronographs. Drawing inspiration from the legendary 417 ES, yet designed with a more technical, forward leaning character, the Red Lion Mk II reflects the fusion of historic military purpose with modern usability. It is the result of a close collaboration between Hanhart and TGV of Gentry Labs, bringing together traditional chronograph architecture and contemporary functionality in a way that feels cohesive, refined and purposeful.
While the DNA of the 417 ES remains evident, the Red Lion Mk II is very much its own machine. The matte black dial, oversized 30 minute counter at 3 o’clock, and crisp Arabic numerals set the foundation for exceptional legibility. Super-Luminova C1 X2 coatings on the hands and numerals ensure visibility day and night, while the distinctive red tipped minute counter adds clarity under quick reading. At the heart of the watch lies a hand wound Sellita AMT5100 M column wheel calibre with flyback function, central chronograph seconds, 30 minute counter, small seconds, hacking, and a 58 hour power reserve.
Measuring 39 mm in diameter with a height of 13.6 mm and a 46 mm lug to lug, the stainless steel case offers balanced proportions suitable for daily wear. The surfaces move between satin and polished finishing, creating a tool driven profile with refined detailing. A bidirectional 12 hour bezel with 24 precise clicks offers intuitive GMT light capability. By rotating the bezel to match the time difference, a second time zone can be tracked at a glance without the need for an additional hand. This functionality, executed with practicality in mind, makes the Red Lion Mk II an ideal companion for pilots, travellers and those navigating between locations.
Front visibility is supported by a highly domed sapphire crystal with anti reflective treatment on both sides of the dial. The rear of the case reveals the movement through a sapphire display back, complete with the finely integrated Gentry Labs watermark printed subtly on the inside of the glass. This detail adds a quiet signature to the collaboration without disrupting the view of the flyback calibre. The case is water resistant to 10 bar in accordance with DIN 8310, providing robust protection for varied environments.
A number of distinctive design details give the Red Lion Mk II its own identity. Chief among them is the red HyCeram pusher, a feature with strong ties to Hanhart’s heritage. Practical in purpose yet meaningful in history, it reflects the brand’s long standing role in aviation timing instruments. HyCeram combines ceramic hard wearing qualities with the resilience of a polymer matrix, offering durability and vivid colour stability.
Equally important is the emphasis on legibility. The enlarged Big Eye counter improves clarity of elapsed minutes, while the straightforward matte dial avoids unnecessary decoration. The date window at 6 o’clock sits cleanly within the composition, balancing functionality without cluttering the design. Every visual element supports quick reading in challenging conditions, staying true to the principles of classic pilot’s instrumentation.
Two strap options provide flexibility for different environments. The FKM rubber strap is designed for high performance conditions, offering resistance to heat, sweat, oils and chemicals, making it ideal for sport or professional use. Its comfort and resilience make it a strong everyday choice. The alternative stainless steel bracelet presents a more traditional, robust aesthetic, complete with folding clasp for secure wear. Both options pair naturally with the tool focused character of the watch, allowing owners to tailor its look and functionality.
The Hanhart Red Lion Mk II stands as a modern interpretation of a historic chronograph, refined through contemporary materials, enhanced readability and a flyback calibre chosen for mechanical integrity. Its combination of heritage, purpose built features and modern craftsmanship positions it as a compelling addition to Hanhart’s pilot oriented line up and a fitting continuation of a legacy that began with the iconic 417 ES.
