Description
Hanhart MAD Preventor HD12
The Hanhart MAD Preventor HD12 brings a new set of proportions to one of Hanhart’s most capable everyday watches. Created in collaboration with British watch enthusiast Russell, better known as the MAD Watch Collector, this limited edition introduces the Preventor HD12 in a 36 mm case for the first time. The smaller dimensions give the watch a classically proportioned character while retaining the strength, legibility and practical engineering that define the Preventor collection.
Its matte Black Forest green dial provides an immediate connection to Hanhart’s home in Gütenbach, deep within Germany’s Black Forest. The restrained colour shifts between rich green and darker, almost muted tones depending on the light, providing character without compromising the watch’s functional approach. A historic Hanhart logo sits above the centre, while luminous Arabic numerals, cathedral-style hands and a central seconds hand create the clear, highly readable layout expected from the brand.
Legibility remains excellent after dark thanks to Super-LumiNova® C3 X2 GL applied to the numerals and hands. The warm luminous tone complements the vintage influence of the cathedral handset while maintaining the functionality required of an everyday watch. The clean three-hand configuration is also free from a date window, leaving the symmetry of the dial uninterrupted and reinforcing the straightforward design philosophy behind the Preventor.
The 36 mm case is manufactured from Hanhart’s hardened HD12™ steel, which combines a surface-hardening treatment with an additional transparent PVD hard coating. During the initial treatment, carbon diffuses into the stainless steel rather than simply forming a surface layer, producing a gradual transition between the exceptionally hard exterior and the softer core. This helps avoid the brittleness associated with some conventional hard coatings. The finished material achieves a surface hardness of up to approximately 1,200 HV, compared with around 220 HV for conventional 316L stainless steel, while still allowing Hanhart to combine satin-finished and polished surfaces across the case.
Despite the reduced case diameter, the 20 mm lug width was deliberately retained at Russell’s suggestion. Combined with a 43 mm lug-to-lug measurement and a slim 10.5 mm case height, the result is compact without appearing delicate. It also gives owners access to an extensive range of aftermarket straps. The watch is offered on calfskin with an Alcantara lining in several colours, while an optional hardened stainless steel bracelet adds quick-release spring bars and a folding clasp with tool-free fine adjustment. A screw-down crown and 15 ATM water resistance provide the practical durability expected from a watch intended to be worn regularly.
Inside is the automatic Sellita SW200-1, configured as a true no-date three-hand movement with only two crown positions. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides at least 38 hours of power reserve. More importantly, each movement is tested and regulated by Hanhart in Gütenbach to achieve an average daily rate between 0 and +8 seconds across six positions, with the brand deliberately avoiding a slow-running result in the main positions. Limited to just 200 pieces, the Hanhart MAD Preventor HD12 combines enthusiast-led proportions, unusually durable case technology and the functional watchmaking principles that have shaped Hanhart since 1882.
