Description
Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition
The Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition represents a rare convergence of two of the most complex disciplines in mechanical watchmaking – resonance and minute repeating. Conceived as a complete reimagining of earlier resonance concepts, this timepiece introduces an entirely new architecture, refined proportions, and a heightened level of mechanical sophistication. Encased in a compact 42 mm titanium case with a notably slim profile, it achieves a remarkable balance between technical density and wearable elegance.
At its core lies a striking system elevated beyond convention. The traditional two-hammer repeater has been expanded into a full Westminster chiming mechanism, featuring four hammers and four gongs. This allows the watch to produce a richer, more layered acoustic performance. Beyond simply telling the time through sound, the watch introduces a second striking mode – the 12:59 function – which delivers the longest possible chiming sequence on demand, creating a theatrical and immersive mechanical experience.
This dual-mode capability is controlled via a column wheel system, ensuring precise switching between the standard “On Time” mode and the extended 12:59 sequence. A discreet aperture on the dial provides a clear visual indication of the selected mode, while the activation slider at 9 o’clock both winds and releases the repeater mechanism. The visible flying governor, positioned prominently on the dial side, regulates the tempo of the chiming while offering a dynamic visual focal point during operation.
The watch’s openworked design remains unmistakably Armin Strom, yet it is expressed here with a refined restraint. Softer lines and a more fluid architecture bring a sense of calm to an otherwise highly complex composition. The resonance clutch has been repositioned to animate upward, drawing attention to the synchronisation of the twin balance wheels. These dual regulating systems operate in harmonic resonance, each powered by its own barrel, gear train, escapement, and balance, working together in precise equilibrium.
Powering this achievement is the entirely new in-house Calibre ARR25, a manually wound movement that embodies Armin Strom’s technical and philosophical approach to independent watchmaking. Comprising 506 components and 74 jewels, the movement integrates both resonance and a full Westminster minute repeater within a remarkably compact form. The dual regulating systems demand an extraordinary level of precision, with each component contributing to the delicate balance required for sustained resonance.
Finishing is executed entirely by hand, reinforcing the artisanal nature of the piece. On the dial side, mirror-polished hammers, gongs, and resonance clutch elements contrast against frosted surfaces and finely decorated bridges. The flying governor is meticulously finished with hand-bevelled edges and circular graining, while the reverse side reveals Geneva stripes, straight graining, and intricate detailing throughout. Every surface has been considered, creating a timepiece that is as visually compelling as it is mechanically profound.
